The Voice and the Road Ahead

Julian Leeser MP, the Shadow Attorney-General and the Shadow Minister for Indigenous Australians, address the National Press Club

Leeser announced he will campaign for a model he put forward at the National Press Club last week to remove the Indigenous voices power.

Acknowledging the traditional owners of the land on which they met, Leeser said he believed the current model for Indigenous recognition in the constitution was "not the right way forward."

"I believe that the best way to achieve Indigenous recognition is through a referendum that asks a simple question: 'Do you support an alteration to the constitution that establishes an Indigenous voice?'"

Leeser said his model would give Indigenous Australians a "genuine say" in the decisions that affect their lives.

"It would be a body that would advise the government on Indigenous affairs and would have the power to make recommendations to parliament," he said.

Leeser said he believed his model was the best way to achieve Indigenous recognition in the constitution and urged all Australians to support it.

"This is an opportunity for us to come together as a nation and to finally achieve Indigenous recognition in our constitution," he said.

"Let's make this happen."
