Joseph Manchin III was born on August 24, 1947, in Farmington, West Virginia. He earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from West Virginia University and later worked in the coal industry for over two decades.

Political Career

Manchin entered the political arena in 1982, serving as a member of the West Virginia House of Delegates for six years. He was subsequently elected to the West Virginia State Senate, where he served as president from 1996 to 2000. In 2004, he was elected Governor of West Virginia, a position he held until 2010.
